Threads Adds DM Inbox to Compete With Rivals

June 10, 2025

Threads Finally Introduces Its Own DM Inbox

Meta has announced a major update to its Threads platform—a dedicated direct message (DM) inbox. This means users can now chat on Threads without needing to switch over to Instagram, marking a key step in making Threads a fully independent social network.

According to Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, the new feature is being tested in select regions including Hong Kong, Thailand, and Argentina. Initially, it will support only one-on-one messaging, with group chat capabilities not yet available.

The move is significant. Threads launched in July 2023, heavily relying on Instagram’s user network. But over time, users have built different communities on Threads, many of whom don’t actively use Instagram. Recognizing this shift, Meta decided to develop a standalone messaging system directly within Threads.

Previously, Meta had tested ways to link Threads with the Instagram inbox, but that strategy didn’t align with how users were actually engaging on the platform. Threads’ public, short-form nature made its network more similar to X (formerly Twitter) or Bluesky than Instagram.

User demand played a big role in pushing Meta to roll out the new inbox. Many wanted a way to connect privately without jumping between apps. However, Meta is arriving late to the party. Bluesky introduced DMs in May 2024, and X recently launched XChat, which includes group messaging, disappearing chats, and file sharing.

Still, this is a meaningful change. As Threads continues to evolve, the dedicated DM inbox could help it better serve its growing base of active users—and position it more competitively in the social media space.
