Many people choose to leave X, formerly known as Twitter. Some want to reduce their digital footprint. Others want to distance themselves from Elon Musk’s influence or escape the changing culture of the platform. Some simply prefer newer alternatives like Threads or Bluesky. Whatever the reason, deleting your X account is straightforward if you follow the process carefully.
To delete your X account permanently, you must first deactivate it. After you deactivate, you need to avoid logging in for 30 straight days. If you stay logged out, X will permanently erase your account. Deactivation hides your profile, posts, and username from public view. However, posts where you were tagged may still stay visible to others. Once deactivated, you cannot post, comment, or browse your timeline unless you reactivate.
Before you deactivate, you should request and download your data archive. X does not allow users to retrieve their archive after they deactivate. If you want to keep a record of your posts and account activity, you must complete this step first.
The deactivation process requires you to open X, navigate to the More menu, and go into Settings and Privacy. Then, you select Deactivate your account under the Your Account section. After reviewing the warnings, you confirm your choice by entering your password and finalizing the deactivation. If you avoid logging in for 30 days after this step, X will permanently delete your account.
If you change your mind within the 30-day window, you can still reactivate. You simply log back into X with your username and password. X will ask if you want to reactivate. Once you agree, you regain access to your account. Some features, like follower counts and post likes, might take a little time to update fully.
Deleting your X account removes your public presence on the platform. However, X may still keep some internal data for safety and platform security purposes. Even though some backend information stays, the public will no longer see your profile, posts, or activity.
Choosing to leave X allows you to take control of your digital identity. Whether you seek a break or a permanent departure, understanding the steps ensures you stay in charge of your online presence.
