Google is expanding its translation app with a new Google Translate learning feature designed to rival popular apps like Duolingo. Announced on Tuesday, the update introduces AI-powered practice sessions that adapt to a user’s skill level, alongside enhanced live translation capabilities for real-time conversations.
The practice mode allows learners—whether beginners or advanced speakers—to set their goals and skill level within the Translate app. From there, it generates tailored exercises such as listening activities where users tap words they recognize or speaking drills that improve fluency. Daily progress tracking helps learners stay consistent and measure improvement.
This beta rollout is currently available for English speakers learning Spanish and French, as well as Spanish, French, and Portuguese speakers learning English, on both Android and iOS devices.
Alongside learning tools, Google has also upgraded its live conversation feature. Users can now hold back-and-forth dialogues in more than 70 languages, including Arabic, Hindi, Korean, Spanish, Tamil, and French. The app translates speech in real time, displaying transcripts for both participants. It also accounts for pauses, accents, and intonation, making conversations sound natural even in noisy settings like restaurants or airports.
Powered by Google’s Gemini AI models, the update advances multimodal translation, text-to-speech, and accuracy. Google says people already translate over 1 trillion words each day across its services—including Translate, Search, Lens, and Circle to Search. With these new tools, the company aims to break down barriers and make Google Translate learning more immersive, practical, and interactive than ever before.
